Muscat

Omans capital and its largest city, Muscat offer an absorbing snapshot of the country’s past and present. It is here that you will find Oman at its most contemporary and consumerist, exemplified by the string of lush hotels, backed up by nobby restaurants and modern malls. It is also unquestionably the commercial and administrative powerhouse of modern Oman, from the stately government buildings in town through to the high-rise office blocks of the Ruwis Central Business District. Significant reminders of the city’s past remain, however. These include the engaging port district of Muttrah and the nearby quarter of Old Muscat, spread out along a salty seafront lined with old Portuguese forts, colorful mosques and assorted traditional Arabian buildings. Muttrah and neighboring Ruwi also offer the city’s most interesting street life, and the best view of the patchwork of cultures which make up the city: Omani, Indian and Pakistani, with an occasional hint of Zanzibar, Baluchi and Iranian thrown in for good measure – a living memory of the city’s surprisingly cosmopolitan past.
